Ok, so curiosity got the best of me and I impulse bought this...it's touted as an MMO, but I wouldn't define it as one in the traditional sense. It's a 3rd-person, team-based shooter. Think TF2, but third person, and sci-fi.
It's starting to grow on me, but I'm still not 100% sure how the upgrade system works (improving your armor, etc), but it looks like it's temporary upgrades that need to be replaced.
Basically, you can buy the game and play for free in team-based matches. There are four classes to pick from (essentially an engie, medic, scout, and heavy), and you create a toon, choose a class, and level the character in the matches, and in PvE maps. There are three skill trees for each class as well, so you can specialize your character in a variety of ways. Each class also has its own weapons, buffs, etc.
The paid part is more a global clan-vs-clan aspect. It also appears to include crafting (though I can't imagine the crafting will be terribly intuitive or interesting), and some other perks.
Apparently, they wanted the paid aspect to be a come-and-go-as-you-please piece, so while people that pay for the Conquest mode will have more things to do, those that choose to just play the free game will still have plenty of matches to play in, and will still be able to interact with the paid subscribers. They also won't miss anything is they pay one month, skip five, and come back.

Take a look see. The intial information I read was that this was a bit like TF2, Tribes, and Borderlands mixed. So far I'd say it's closest to TF2. Could be interesting to get some games going if people find it engaging enough. The beauty of it is, for me at least, it's not the same grind over and over like normal MMOs, which eventually run out of steam once you level cap. This is constant PVP battle. It'd be even cooler if it were an FPS like I had orginially thought, but it is becoming a bit addicting...
