Hey all!

Just arrived home today after 2 months away in Borden, Ontario for BMQ. Just checking in and getting settled back into the swing of things and figured I'd let you all have a quick update on whats been going on lol.

What an amazing summer. It was the best summer of my life, hands down. I've done so much cool stuff (and got paid for it!) and met so many cool people, absolutely amazing.

Some awesome stuff I've done:

Learned how to survive chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear attacks. We had full CBRN suits, gas masks, gloves... the whole 9 yards, and learned how to put it all on - quickly, and under test conditions we had to enter a room filled with tear gas, get geared up and do drills like decontamination and drinking with mask on. The march back to barracks (about 1.5km) in full suit and mask wasn't quite as fun (especially in 40 degree weather).

Fired the C7 (Basically the M16 with an added casing deflector) on semi and full auto on the range for a few days. Fired off about 8000 rounds across the platoon, was an absolute blast, even got to shoot at night down range. Very exhilarating as it was the first time I've handled and fired a weapon. Cleaning it afterwards wasn't quite as fun however...

Went out to the field (wooded area) for 6 days (2 sets of 3 day stints) and learned how to navigate with map and compass through deep woods during day AND night. That was a ton of fun. We slept in hoochies (miserable). I was the best navigator in the entire platoon as well. Second stint out there we focused on combat drills. Falling in for battle, cam paint, formations, covering and advancing on enemy trenches etc. we also ate IMP's, which are packages of food chock full of preservatives and are a few years old, its the things they eat at FOB's overseas in Afghanistan.

Learned how to make Swiss seat harnesses out of a single rope and rapelled down 15ft and 45ft walls, and also off a helicopter skid simulator (45ft high). Very exhilarating.

Did a 3, 6, 9 and 13km rucksack march. Rucks have about 52kg of weight in them, along with that we had to wear our tac vests and helmets. Very, very tiring.

We did the obstacle course, which was very fun, but didn't get enough time on it.

The cherry on top however was the Forward Operating Base. They have a base set up that mimics what FOBs look like over in Afghanistan. Barbed wire fence perimeter, guard tower in the center, gate at the front, flood lights on the corners etc. It was really well made. We had to have rotations of base security, walking the perimeter, had people in the guard tower watching, people at the gate doing security checks etc. We had a quick reaction section who would respond to things like RPG attacks, IED's, downed pilots and other things. They had a platoon of people as the actors who would be terrorists and civilians and stuff and do things that they do over in Afghanistan, was very cool.

Along with all that we had patrols to do, where we would be ambushed and have to react to it and kill the attackers, we had blanks in the weapons and it felt awesome to hit the ground and advance towards to enemy in formation, covering each other and such.

On the final day there, we were attacked, en masse by the entire demo platoon, we had to take up defensive positions around the perimeter of the base while artillery simulations would be dropped all around us making huge bangs and explosions, grenade sims, smoke grenades and heavy MG fire. I fired off 5 magazines of blanks during the attack.

During the whole 3 days there I got maybe 90 minutes of sleep... it hurt.

I recommend doing this for any Canadian looking to do something with their life and to experience some awesome shit. We looked amazing on grad day in our white uniforms and stuff, performed drill and felt incredibly proud of everything we accomplished. I'll upload pics later on after I get settled in, but wow I still can't believe its over. What a ride.

I'm officially in the Canadian Forces now :)
